Melbourne to Macedon Ranges & Spa Country Itinerary

Day 1: Melbourne to Bacchus Marsh - Daylesford

Distance 109km Approx drive time 1 hour and 30 minutes

Travel along the Western Highway through the thoroughbred country of Melton, home to many famous racehorses. Further along the highway, pass through Bacchus Marsh and Ballan, where historic architecture recalls the late 1800s and early 1900s. To the north, visit Lerderderg State Park or Wombat State Forest. Continue onto Daylesford. If you have time, unwind with a mineral bath or one of many other therapeutic treatments at the Hepburn Spa Resort.

Day 2: Daylesford to Trentham to Macedon

Distance 60km Approx drive time 1 hour

Mineral water flows freely form the many natural springs in the region, with the largest concentration in Hepburn Springs. There are many things to see and do in Daylesford, inculding some excellent galleries and craft shops. When you have finished exploring, be sure to stop and discover the majestic Trentham Falls. It is then only a short drive to Hanging Rock, the setting of the famous Australian movie, "Picnic at Hanging Rock". Give yourself plenty of time to explore this amazing natural marvel.

Day 3: Macedon to Melbourne

Distance 120km Approx drive time 1 hour and 45 minutes

In the towns around the Macedon Ranges you can explore the beautiful architecture of the mid to late 1860s. This area was the main route from Melbourne to the goldfields and much of the charm of these early pioneer days still remains. Macedon Ranges is synonymous with fine cold climate wines. Lancefield, Romsey, Kyneton and around Hanging Rock are the main areas. Cellar doors are open almost everyday to showcase the crisp tastes on offer. Head back to Melbourne through Sunbury, the "Birthplace of the Ashes" or down through Kilmore on the Northern or Hume Highway. Either way you will have the opportunity to explore the riches of this region.
